A Love That Fights Through the Chaos: Adoption Trauma Healing for Moms

When I finalized my children’s adoption, I thought the hard part was over.
We had made it through endless home visits, mounds of paperwork, sleepless nights, and tears. They were safe now. They were loved. They were home. But what I didn’t understand then was that adoption trauma doesn’t end when the court says "approved."

1. Understanding Adoption Trauma Healing: It Takes Time
My children were safe—but their nervous systems still didn’t feel safe. Their bodies remembered the trauma of separation. Their minds hadn’t yet learned to trust love.
Some days, they act out and don’t even know why. They cry, flinch, push away—even in moments of peace. And as a mother, that breaks me.
2. The Weight of Secondhand Trauma in Parenting
I often feel like I’m doing everything right—and still failing. I pour out my love, my patience, my energy. But there are still tantrums, fears, and outbursts.
Then comes the guilt. Because I know they didn’t choose this trauma, and I’ll never fully understand it. But what I’ve come to realize is this: I’m experiencing secondhand trauma—the emotional residue of loving someone who is hurting.
It’s real. And it’s heavy.
3. How Faith Helps with Adoption Trauma Healing
When I feel like I’m drowning, I turn to the only One who knows exactly how to carry me—Christ.
He meets me in the overwhelm. He whispers peace in the chaos. He reminds me that I was created, prepared, and called for this — even when I feel completely unequipped.
Seeing my kids through Jesus’ eyes helps me love them beyond their behavior. Seeing myself through His eyes reminds me that I’m not failing—I’m fighting for them.

4. You’re Not Alone, Mama
If you’re navigating adoption trauma healing, if your child is carrying invisible pain, and you’re running on empty—please hear this:
You are not alone. You are not failing. You are being held.
Lay your fears, your fatigue, and your pain at His feet. He will carry you through it, just like He carries me.
